Comprising the 1961 & 1962 serials A For Andromeda and its sequel The Andromeda Breakthrough, both written by Fred Hoyle and John Elliott. A For Andromeda sees the construction of an alien designed computer by scientist John Fleming (Peter Halliday). Once built, however, the computer secretly kills one of the lab assistants Christine (Julie Christie), then gives detailed instructions for a new biological organism to be created, which quickly develops into a fully grown woman, almost identical to Christine, now known as Andromeda. Fleming becomes convinced the computer is intent on world domination and must be destroyed but both the British Government and the computer have other ideas.... The Andromeda Breakthrough continues exactly where A for Andromeda left off, with all but Julie Christie from the original casting returning, who was unavailable and replaced with Susan Hampshire in the part of Andromeda. Of the original, long-lost A For Andromeda, one complete episode (ep 6) has been recovered and includes a commentary with actor Peter Halliday and Producer Michael Hayes. All existing footage from the other episodes is included on this three disc set, plus a full run of telesnap images to fill in the gaps with accompanying text narrative. PDFs of the scripts for A for Andromeda are also included along with items from the Radio Times, an extensive photo-gallery with music plus a documentary reuniting the original cast and crew.
